5 Tips on Being Productive While Working From Home
With everything happening in the world, telecommuting has become a normality. For most of us working from home is new and something we will have to adapt to. Telecommuting can be challenging or even scary for some, but I have put together some tips to keep you on track and maximize your time at home.
Keep up with your morning routine and set an alarm
Even though working from home sounds like you have all the time in the world and can make your own schedule, setting your alarm and sticking to your daily routine keeps your body on a schedule. Working from home is already a different concept for your body, getting out of your daily routine can really throw your body clock off, causing a whole new set of challenges. Tip: Set your alarm and do your morning routine as if you were still going into work.
Designate a Specific Work Space
Although not everyone has a specific room they can designate as a “home office”, finding a space to do your work can help increase your productivity. Although sitting in front of the TV and binging your favorite show while working sounds fun, it may not be the most effective. Finding a dining table, desk, or even kitchen counter can help your body know its still in work mode. Tip: If you are able to designate a specific room with a door to doing your work, try closing the door each night. Telling your brain when its time to be in “work mode” and when its time to shut down for the night.
Get Ready for the Day
Although working from your pajamas sounds like the best thing ever, it isn’t always the most productive. Waking up and brushing your hair, taking a shower, putting on some makeup, or even changing out of your sleep wear can increase productivity and get your body into work mode.
Make a Daily To-Do List
Working from home comes with a whole new set of distractions. Making your To-Do list the night before or even first thing in the morning will help you to prioritize your day and keep you on track with your tasks. Tip: Try making your to-do list by hour and each hour have a new task to complete, giving you a timeline to finish each task and keeping you on a timely schedule. Doing this you will find your day more organized and tasks easier to complete in a timely matter.
Take Breaks
If you are like me and are used to working in an office, your body is probably used to having breaks. Whether its a morning coffee break, the hourly water refills, or even the occasional walk outside to see the sun and take a deep breathe, your body is used to a mental break. Allowing yourself to still take those mental breaks can keep you on task. Tip: At the top of every hour, once completing a task take a 5 minute break, grab some water and return to your work space ready to jump into the next task.
Working from home may be the new normal for a lot of us, but it doesn’t mean we have to compromise our productivity. Implementing these 5 simple tips into your new work life can help make a smooth and more organized transition.
